I have included these lesson plans in my portfolio, because they were some of the best lessons of my PSI and PSII experience. These lesson plans demonstrate my ability to develop lesson plans that take into consideration the context variables that affect teaching and learning. (KSA 1) In my plans I have outlined how students are to be assessed and possible differentiated instruction if need be. Below are the subject areas I taught for PSI and PSII, with my favorite lesson plans and handouts included in the descriptions.

Consumerism Project - What Guides Your Behaviour as a Consumer?
For these series of lessons, the objectives were:
SLO: 9.2.2 appreciate the relationship between consumerism and quality of life SLO: 9.2.4 compare and contrast the principles and practices of market and mixed economies by exploring and reflecting on upon the following questions and issues:
In order to explore these objectives further and demonstrate their knowledge of these ideas, the students were asked to create a product advertisement or commercial individually or in small groups.
The students were excited to complete this project because it gave them the opportunity to be creative and pursue their interests. I was able to plan for instruction, translating curriculum and outcomes into meaningful learning activities. (KSA 6) |
This was the project description that the students were provided with.

Here are just a few of the final advertisement projects that were created and that I was given permission by the students to post.
Differentiated Instruction in this Lesson
For this project, I presented the students with a variety of ways to create their advertisements so long as they met the project criteria. Some students chose to work with a small group and others chose to work individually. Students were also able to create their advertisement for an already existing product or they could create an new product based on their interests. I booked the computer lab and the students were encouraged to use any of the technology available to them to create their advertisements/commercials. This demonstrates my application of a variety of technologies to meet students’ learning needs. (KSA 10)
An alternative assignment was also available to students that were away from school or were unable to complete the project due to other reasons.

Problem Solving - Apples Up on Top
For this lesson the learning objective was to have students make a model to solve a problem and so I used the book Ten Apples Up on Top By: Theo LeSieg as an engaging way to present the students with a problem "Lion" had which he needed their help to solve. The point to the lesson was that there was no right or wrong answer, but rather many possible solutions. After reading the book it was there job to come up with these solutions.
This lesson provides evidence that there are many approaches to teaching and learning. Using literature in this lesson was the best way to help the students achieve the outcome of problem solving. (KSA 9) There are 13 apples in Lion's bag. Some are yellow. Some are red. How many of each could there be?
These are some of the solutions the students came up with: |
Differentiated Instruction in this Lesson
For this lesson I presented the advanced students with the challenge of coming up with their own problem for the class to solve. This is one of the situations where I identified that these two students required more of a challenge and responded to the learner difference by providing them with one. (KSA 5)
Two of the students worked together to come up with this problem for the class.

Cheetahs - Things We Want to Learn
Google class was the grade 1's version of a intro to computers class. For my time with them we brainstormed possible things they wanted to learn more about, things that we could "google." As a class we decided on Cheetahs and came up with five questions we wanted to answer.
1) Why do they run so fast? 2) How do they run so fast? 3) Are they born with spots or do they grow? 4) What do they eat? (Not humans!) 5) What sound do they make? For this lesson we learned that cheetahs are indeed born with spots. So while the students were applying what they learned about cheetah spots onto their own cheetah cut-outs, we played pin the spot on our spotless cheetah.. |
For this lesson I showed a YouTube clip for the class to learn more about cheetah running, why and how they run so fast. The students loved it and it was a different way of providing them with the information using computers.
This provides evidence of an appropriate use of technology to enhance student learning. (KSA 10) |
